I am Sorry

“Sometimes, I wonder what my world will be like, if I didn’t have someone like you in my life.”(Rebecca). Love is the most common emotion that people have. People always have someone which he likes and falls in love with. However, love is painful, and people always make mistakes. Even couples would have argument with each others. Sometimes people even hurt each other even it is the person he loved. The poem “I am Sorry” by Rebecca H. uses the rhyme couplets as structure to tell the boy which the speaker loved about her feeling of apologize and how much she wants to fall in love forever with him.

The poem is very simple, it has only 12 lines with 6 stanzas. It does not include any complex vocabulary so it looked easy for the audience to understand and remember. It use rhyme couplets which have two successive rhyming lines in a verse and has the same meter to form a complete thought(literarydevices.net). Besides that, couplets sometimes represent couples in poetry. In this poem, the speaker wrote about the love between a couple which is herself and her boyfriend. Overall the poem, we can infer that the speaker used to have a boyfriend and now they broke up because some problems happen between them. The speaker wondered what her life will be without her boyfriend, and she figure out that she really loves him and she wants to stay with him. So in the poem, she used rhyme couplets for each of the stanza and connect the two lines in one stanza. All the stanzas have the words “I” and “you”, so it’s clear that the whole poem is about the relationship between two people.

In the first stanza, the speaker wondered what her life will be if her boyfriend wasn’t with her. “Sometimes I wonder what my world will be like, If i didn’t have someone like you in my life.” This gives the audience the information that the story is about the love between the speaker and the guy she like. And from the title “I am sorry”, we can clarify that the poem is about the apologize in love. Then in the second stanza, she found out that she can’t live with out him. So she wrote that:”I came back to reality only to see, that I wouldn’t live myself without you and me.” In this stanza, the speaker got an answer from what she wondered in the first stanza. She use rhyme couplets “see” and “me” to refer to the relationship between couple and make connection with the phrase “you” and “me” in the second line.

The third and fourth stanza is like the transition in this poem which showed how much she wanted to stay with him by using the rhyme couplets “me” and “be”, “you and “through”. Those rhyme couplets refer to the relationship between “I” and “you”. “I am looking forwards to the future, hoping you will be with me. And I want to spend the rest of my life making it up to you.” After the speaker wondered her life without her boyfriend, she expressed how much she loves him in this poem. She wanted to spent the rest of her life with him. After that, the last line of the fourth line leads to the point of the poem which is apologize. She knew all the mistakes that she had made and all the hell she had been putting him through. Those two stanzas transfer the point of the poem from expressing her love into expressing her apologize.

So in the third stanza, she felt sorry and she apologized:” I am so sorry, and I can’t say that enough.” She hoped that this will be the last time they had a argument. She still loved him and she will love him forever. The rhyme couplets “enough” and “rough” show that there was enough rough between their relationship and She wanted get back with her boyfriend at the end of the poem by saying that she loved him with all her heart and she will love him forever. The last rhyme couplets “heart” and “part” retell her love and showing the point of the poem which is to recover her relationship with her boyfriend. 

I chose this poem because I also have kind of similar experience as the speaker. I have a girlfriend, and we love each other. Although we have arguments all the time, we really love each other and want to stay with each other. So every time, we apologize and get back together. The poem reminds me about my girlfriend and I want send this poem to her as the poem has said: I feel sorry about all the mistakes I made to make you feel unhappy. I loved you completely and I hope you can be with me forever.
